Five Great Spring Detox Foods
With spring finally here, I’m always excited to take a new approach to my diet and part of that is my ‘out with the old and in with the new’ philosophy. For me, a season change is a great time to detox but with two small kids and a super active lifestyle, I don’t want to try anything too extreme. So I was excited, as publisher of a yoga lifestyle magazine Alignyo, to see this story come across my desk. What’s inspiring is that the recipes from health coach Jenne Claiborne taste awesome, the ingredients literally come from nature…and they all have detoxifying properties. Enjoy and prepare for the new season upon us. —Liz
It is officially spring, and you’re looking for the best detox regimen to recharge your health. Where do you turn? Juice fast, smoothie cleanse, Master cleanse, herbal teas, detox kits? There are so many ways to detoxify, but don’t forget that each spring Mother Nature blesses us with a variety of whole plant foods that support and nourish us more effectively than any juice fast can. Make these seasonal foods an integral part of your diet this spring, and rest assured that a magnificent inner detoxification and regeneration is happening within.
FIVE SPRING DETOX FOODS
Both dandelion greens and roots are known to support detoxification of the liver, kidneys and digestive system. As a natural diuretic the plant stimulates removal of wastes and toxins. The bitter quality of dandelion contributes to a mild laxative effect in some people. Try them in a salad or a smoothie with other greens to cover the bitterness.
This spicy green stimulates detoxifying enzymes in the liver and is a mild diuretic, a lot like dandelion greens. It is chock full of nutrients, and is an amazing addition to salads, sandwiches and soups.
Along with a wide variety of phtyonutrients, minerals and omega-3 fatty acids, peas are full of protein and fiber that help keep us satiated between meals. Our bodies go into detoxification mode after digestion has stopped, so it is important to not eat constantly throughout the day, thus never giving your digestion a break. Eat fiber rich foods, like peas, to maintain balanced blood sugar levels and satiety. The fiber in peas is also essential for healthy elimination.

Lemons aid in detoxification in a few ways. Firstly, they help to stimulate the digestive system. Lemons also contain impressive amounts of vitamin C and other antioxidants that protect our cells from damage and fight toxins throughout the body. To support daily detoxification drink lemon water in the morning, and all day.
All fruits support healthy detox, so make sure to eat plenty each day. Mangos are high in fiber, antioxidants and B vitamins, and they are incredibly versatile. Try a green smoothie with mango or a green mango salad.
