Friday Five: Apps to Help You Do The KIND Thing
It’s easy to get caught up in the demands of your every day schedule, but with these five apps in your pocket, we hope you can find some time to Do The KIND Thing. From sourcing volunteer opportunities, running for a cause, to encouraging daily act of kindness, this roundup is sure to inspire you to get involved!
The largest online resource for connecting volunteers with opportunities is now in the convenience of your pocket. With over 62,000 open volunteer opportunities, you can search using your current location, a zipcode, date range or by keywords.
Flash Volunteer (iOS)
This easy GPS-enabled app is working towards being the world’s first real-time real-world volunteer platform. Although currently only available for the greater Seattle area, you can search for opportunities by location and date. A fun function with Flash Volunteer is the potential to create a Cause Crowd—a flash mob for volunteers!
Pay it Forward (iOS)
Although the design of this app leaves much to be desired, its core purpose encourages users to perform a small act of kindness every day. The app sends a daily suggestion with an act of kindness that is designed to be simple, fun and effective. Track your own progress or checkin on the world map that shows where the most deeds are being completed. There’s even a special section for teachers/students that has daily deeds for the classroom.
Set personal goals for yourself to Do the KIND Thing. The Instead App encourages you to spend less on things like eating out and donate those small savings to organizations that are making a difference. Instead of buying that morning coffee, brew your own. Then send a microdonation to help provide clean water to child in South Sudan for a year!
Charity Miles (iOS and Android)
Charity Miles encourages an active lifestyle awarding walkers, runners and bikers a small amount of money for logging miles on the app. Earning between 10-25 cents per miles, users can accumulate funds and then apply their earnings toward a charity of their choice—options include Habitat for Humanity, the Michael J Fox Foundation, Feeding America, the Nature Conservancy and more!
