KIND Spotting: Great Returns on a Small Fortune
KIND Spotting highlights selfless acts of kindness in action in the real world. Here’s a wonderful story about how three roommates decision to Do The KIND Thing made a world of difference for a stranger.
When three young roommates bought a used couch from their local Salvation Army store for $55, creating a comfortable seating arrangement seemed to be their biggest priority. But a month after bringing home the sofa, they noticed that the arm cushions were unusually lumpy. Unzipping one of the arm cushions, New Paltz student Reese Werkhoven found an envelope. Inside was $4000 in bubble-wrapped bills.
As the roommates–Reese, Cally Guasti and Lara Russo–unpacked one cushion and began to unzip the other arm of the couch, they discovered a stash of envelopes that totaled over $40,000. Mixed in with the envelopes was a deposit slip with the name of a woman on it. The called her the next day and as Reese recalled, “She said, ‘I have a lot of money in that couch and I really need it.’”
The next day they drove to the home of the woman and returned the money. The 91-year-old widow cried from gratitude and explained that the couch was donated to Salvation Army while she was having health problems.
Inspired by the kindness of these three young people, KIND celebrates their small act! Share some of your kind stories on social media with the #kindawesome hashtag.
