Say Hello to Sarah Hillyard of The Color Run

By Sarah Hillyard

Hello! My name is Sarah Hillyard and I’m a PR Specialist and writer for The Color Run, a 5k paint event where thousands of participants are doused from head to toe in different colors. I’m also a mom of two, a beginning runner, a real food eater, an avid volunteer and a sociologist.

Known as “the happiest 5k on the planet,” and with over a million participants this year in the United States alone, The Color Run celebrates healthiness, happiness, individuality and giving back. We choose a local charity for each city we visit—we raised donations for over 60 local and national charities in 2012. I love working with great companies like KIND and The Color Run who, are not only industry leaders, but make a point to do good in the world.

Color Run - Columbia, SC

Participants in The Color Run understand and relate to this motivation. “Color Runners,” as they are called, vary widely in demographics and reasons for running—though they share some common themes. Over 60% of Color Runners are first-time 5k runners and participate as a celebration of their healthy living accomplishments. Others participate to honor loved ones who have either passed on, or are fighting diseases. Participants run or volunteer to support the local charity, or even for love—The Color Run has sparked approximately 10 marriage proposals and even one wedding! Over the next few months I’m thrilled to be sharing these stories and more ways Color Runners are doing the kind thing—for their body, their taste buds and their world!
