Wanderlust: Creating Community Through Yoga

After such a wild and busy summer, you’d think we at Wanderlust would want to take a break and catch our breath.  But nay!  We want more!  That’s why we spent a beautiful September Saturday basking in the boundless sunshine at the Piazza at Schmidt’s in Philadelphia!

I had only been to Philly a couple times before, and never to Northern Liberties.  The Piazza at Schmidt’s is a big, open, gorgeous space that was made even more vibrant with the addition of our yoga classes, DJs, and vendors.  It really felt like we were bringing something special to the community, which got me thinking about doing the kind thing for an area.

Northern Liberties is like Brooklyn’s Bedstuy neighborhood (where I live) in that it’s up and coming, but not totally there yet; Every other block or so there is an abandoned lot or a rundown building.  There are adorable coffee shops and boutiques, amazing restaurants and even a couple of yoga studios! The Piazza at Schmidt’s is totally built up and amazing, but it still felt like the area was craving a little more action.

With four yoga classes throughout the day, we expected around 4,000 people came to the event.  That means a lot of people who probably never find themselves in the area were compelled to travel to a new part of town, bringing business to the local shops and finding new favorites.  As a Brooklynite, I understand that getting folks from other neighborhoods to consider your neighborhood a destination means more attention from the city, more budget being allocated to fix your streets or stop signs or whatever, and a renewed sense of community in the area.

Wanderlust’s core mission is to create community around mindful living.  By bringing a day of activities (and of course KIND bars!) to the center of Northern Liberties, I think Wanderlust helped to bring together the somewhat spread out Philadelphia yoga community and strengthen the neighborhood.

Being able to bring some fresh action to this part of town helped renew my commitment to our core mission here at Wanderlust, and my personal core mission to always do the kind thing.
