If there is one thing that I’ve learned from experience, it’s the value of fear. I used to be controlled by my fears. My fears convinced me to stick to what I know. Don’t cross the line. Don’t pass go. You don’t need the extra $200. Stay with the “property” you’ve collected and be happy with earning a solid living. I wasn’t very good at Monopoly…
Everything changed for me when I faced my biggest fear at that time, talking about my struggles with depression and anxiety for the first time. My biggest fear transformed over time into my greatest dreams! An international anti-bullying campaign. An art exhibition in Italy. Becoming my own boss.
I’ve found that a pattern has started to emerge in my life. When I become consumed with fear, when I freeze up with negative thoughts, when I am so uncomfortable I just want to give up—that’s when I know I need to keep going. In those moments, I know that I am on track to do something amazing. I am breaking through the barriers towards my dreams.
Push through to live the life that you dream of and inspire those around you to do the same. When you logically assess the risks associated with your fears, you will find it is significantly less daunting than you expected. Tim Ferriss, author of “The 4-Hour Workweek,” put it simply when he said, ”Just like most people fail to achieve their goals because they are poorly defined, most people are prevented from doing things based on fear because it’s poorly defined.”
Define your fears. Define your dreams. Do that one thing that scares you; you already know what to do.
