KIND Participates as Peanut Week Arrives in NYC

March 4th, 2009

– Contributes Bars to Food Bank of NY, Reminds Consumers of Safety –

March 4, 2009 (New York, NY) – Today New York-based KIND Snacks will join America’ s peanut farmers, more than a dozen major U.S. manufacturers, and other peanut industry organizations at New York City’s Grand Central Station to reassure consumers about the safety of peanuts and educate them about their benefits.

The open house, hosted by the National Peanut Board, is held at a critical time when some consumers are unsure if the recall conducted by the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) last month affected their favorite snacks. KIND was unaffected by the PCA recall, and PCA does not supply any peanut products used in KIND Bars. Over the course of March 4th and 5th, New Yorkers will get to sample peanut products, learn about the benefits of peanuts, and see an actual field of peanuts growing in the heart of Manhattan.

In addition, a sizeable donation from the manufacturers and farmers will be made to the Food Bank of New York to help consumers understand that most peanut products are safe, and they can go back to donating these products to food banks.

Other companies and brands participating include Hampton Farms, Jif, Lance, Mars, MoonPie, Peanut Butter & Co., Peter Pan, Planters, Smithfield Foods/Peanut Shop of Williamsburg, Snyder’s of Hanover and Sunland.

KIND Buzz Drives Explosive Growth for KIND

March 2nd, 2009

– Winner of “Best New Product” at Natural Products Expo East –

– Visit KIND Snacks at Booth #2846 –

March 2, 2009 (New York, NY) – When thousands of food products were showcased at the Natural Products Expo East at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center in October 2008, only one came away with the title of “Best New Product”: KIND Plus.

The Mango Macadamia flavor of KIND Plus – the first new line of products since the launch of PeaceWorks’ original KIND Fruit + Nut Bars – was singled out at Expo East’s New Product Showcase as the best new food item. The contest was sponsored and officiated by the Natural Products Association and The Natural Foods Merchandiser magazine.

But awards and praise from industry leaders don’t tell the whole story about KIND’s growth and success. Recent market reports, word-of-mouth buzz, and glowing recommendations from prominent influencers have all contributed:

  • Good Housekeeping (February 2009) – KIND is the only nutrition bar on “Top 100 Convenience Foods” list
  • Yale School of Medicine (November 2008) – Study shows consumption of KIND Bars per day over eight weeks results in weight loss, lowered blood pressure and improved BMI
  • Gossip Girl (January 2009) – Featured as a snack of a popular character on hit TV show
  • SPINS Market Data (November 2008) – Highest ACV growth among Top 20 Bars in Grocery category.
  • The Today Show (January 2009) – Featured on segment about energy-boosting foods, and specifically recommended by team nutritionist for the New York Giants.
  • Rachel Ray on The Rachel Ray Show (October 2008) – “These are so good…delicious and nutritious.”
  • San Antonio Express-News (September 2008) – “Last year, (KIND) was one of the best-sellers for H-E-B stores that had it. So at the beginning of 2008, we made a strategic decision to bring it to the vast majority…it’s a very sought after energy bar.” – Yvan Cournoyer, category manager for H-E-B
  • SPINS Market Data (November 2008) – KIND Fruit + Nut Bars are the fourth best-selling nutrition bar brand in Natural stores.
  • Businessweek (August 2008) – “(KIND’s founder Daniel) Lubetzky offers an enticing vision, one that combines traditional profit-making models with social bottom line…it sounds good in theory, but works even better in practice.”
  • SPINS Market Data (November 2008) – Sales of KIND Fruit + Nut Bars increased over 100 percent in Grocery category during the past year.
  • First for Women (January 2009) – “To enjoy tropical taste anywhere, unwrap a KIND Fruit + Nut Bar in Almond & Coconut flavor.”
  • IRI Data (June 2008) – Unit sales growth over the past year for KIND’s four best-selling bars ranged from 91 to 127 percent and outpaced all other competitors among the top 100.
  • Philadelphia Inquirer (August 2008) – “Our favorite bars…”

Recently, KIND was the subject of a study by Dr. David Katz of the Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Katz and his team at Yale found that adding two KIND Bars to your diet every day over the course of eight weeks led to weight loss, lower body mass index, and decreased blood pressure. The smaller pilot study Dr. Katz conducted will now be expanded to a larger patient population to verify the results. According to Dr. Katz, “Snacking on wholesome foods can help control appetite and weight, while providing excellent nutrition and displacing less filling foods that contribute empty calories. KIND Bars are just that kind of snack food, made principally of nuts and fruits.”

“In the midst of a recession, we’re thrilled to see KIND continue to thrive and experience explosive sales growth,” said Daniel Lubetzky, Founder and CEO of PeaceWorks Holdings, the makers of KIND Snacks.  “In tough economic times, consumers look for brands that provide value at an affordable price. Coupled with the incredibly positive buzz and word-of-mouth KIND is experiencing – from awards at trade shows to praise from influential media to appearances on hit TV shows – it’s a brand that every retailer should have on their shelves.”

Since 2008, KIND expanded its sales locations by over five thousand in the United States, bringing the total number of retail locations to over 25,000 stores nationwide.  KIND is presently sold in nearly every major retail and grocery chain in the United States including 7-11, Albertson’s, A&P, Duane Reade, GNC, Kroger, Meijer, Publix, Safeway, Shaw’s, Trader Joe’s, Wal-Mart, Whole Foods, Wild Oats, and Vitamin Shoppe.

KIND Snacks Unaffected by Peanut Butter Recall

February 20th, 2009

– All KIND Products Completely Safe, Include No Ingredients from PCA –

February 20, 2009 (New York, NY) – Today KIND Snacks reconfirmed that it is not affected by the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA)  recall, and PCA does not supply any peanut products used in any variety of KIND Fruit + Nut Bars or KIND Plus Nutrition Bars.

FDA and other regulatory agencies have indicated that PCA is the focus of their investigation concerning a recent Salmonella outbreak thought to be caused by tainted peanut butter. KIND does not and has never sourced any ingredients from PCA, and we regularly conduct testing in our facilities to assure compliance with the highest standards for food safety and quality.

Daily Snack Bars May Facilitate Weight Loss

October 28th, 2008

- Pilot Study Led by Dr. David Katz, Director of Yale University’s Prevention Research Center Links KIND Fruit + Nut Bars to Weight Loss and Decrease in Blood Pressure -

October 28, 2008 (Derby, CT)

Snacking- at least on the right kind of food- may help with weight control, according to a recently completed  pilot study at The Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center.  In the pilot study, 20 overweight adults consumed two KIND Fruit & Nut Delight Bars per day for eight weeks along with their habitual diet.  The group experienced an average weight loss of 0.6 pounds, and a reduction of 0.2 in their BMI, along with lowered blood pressure (-3.6 systolic and -1.7 diastolic).  Given the modest sample size, these findings are suggestive rather than definitive, and an expanded follow-up study is now planned.

“Snacking can add calories to the diet, and cause weight gain,” said Dr. David L. Katz, the principal investigator, and Director of Yale University’s Prevention Research Center.  “But snacking on wholesome foods can help control appetite and weight, while providing excellent nutrition- and displacing less filling foods that contribute empty calories.  KIND bars are just that kind of snack food, made principally of nuts and fruits.  We were gratified to see preliminary data support the hypothesis that such bars may offer health and weight benefits when consumed routinely.  We are now eager to conduct an expanded study and generate more definitive results.”

KIND Fruit + Nut Bars are manufactured by PeaceWorks Holdings LLC, an American company based out of Texas and New York.   According to the CEO of the company, Daniel Lubetzky, the line was introduced five years ago to “address the need for snacks that can be both healthful and delicious – to be KIND to one’s body at the same time as we are KIND to our taste buds.”

Mr. Lubetzky added, “We are grateful for Dr. Katz’s research, which we consider essential as our nation is challenged to overcome the diabetes and obesity epidemics.  We are thrilled at the potential of having scientific data confirm our intuition for creating healthy snacks from wholesome ingredients you can see and pronounce.”

KIND Mango Macadamia wins Best New Product Natural Product Expo East, October, 2008

October 21st, 2008

KIND Plus Nutrition Bar Named
“Best New Product” at Natural Products Expo East

– KIND Plus “Mango Macadamia” Singled Out for Top Prize –
– KIND Plus Available Nationwide –

October 21, 2008 (New York, NY) – While thousands of food products were showcased at the Natural Products Expo East this past weekend at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, only one came away with the title of “Best New Product”: KIND Plus. The Mango Macadamia flavor of KIND Plus – the first new line of products since the launch of PeaceWorks’ original KIND Fruit + Nut Bars – was singled out at the massive tradeshow’s New Product Showcase as the best new food item. The contest was sponsored and officiated by the Natural Products Association and The Natural Foods Merchandiser magazine.

“Considering how many products were under consideration, we’re both thrilled and humbled,” said Daniel Lubetzky, Founder and CEO of PeaceWorks Holdings, the makers of KIND Fruit + Nut Bars.  “It’s an incredible honor to have industry leaders single out a KIND Snack as the best new food product at a show as large as Expo East.”

In addition to trade show awards, KIND’s growth and appeal has been recognized by leaders in the grocery industry through the press. In August, the food writers at The Philadelphia Inquirer proclaimed KIND “our favorite bars”, and a September story profiling KIND in the San Antonio Express-News, cited high praise from Yvan Cournoyer, category manager for H-E-B:

“Last year, it was one of the best sellers for the H-E-B stores that had it. So at the beginning of 2008, we made a strategic decision to bring it to the vast majority.” KIND bars went into 125 H-E-B stores in July. Within the chain, that puts it in the same league as PowerBar and Clif Bar, among the highest profile energy bars in the industry.  “So in a few short years, it went from being this obscure product to mainstream,” Cournoyer said. “It’s a very sought after energy bar that tastes great and is very healthy for you. At the same time, there’s a great story behind the KIND company.”

Introducing six new distinctive flavors like Cranberry & Almond, Almond & Cashew, and Passion Fruit Macadamia, KIND Plus brings enhanced nutrition to the delicious taste consumers have come to expect from KIND by adding targeted supplements like calcium, antioxidants, protein, and Omega-3. Loyal fans of KIND will quickly recognize the new bars since KIND Plus is made with all-natural ingredients you can see and pronounce, and bursting with flavor and freshness, just like the original line of KIND Fruit+Nut Bars.

Since the start of 2008, KIND has expanded its sales locations by over five thousand in the United States, bringing the total number of retail locations to over 20,000 stores nationwide.  KIND is presently sold in nearly every major retail and grocery chain in the United States including 7-11, Albertson’s, A&P, Duane Reade, GNC, Kroger, Meijer, Publix, Safeway, Shaw’s, Trader Joe’s, Wal-Mart, Whole Foods, Wild Oats, and Vitamin Shoppe.

“Healthy Fats” and “Slow Carbs” Improve Ovulation and Fertility Odds: New Research from Harvard Study Supports a Diet High in Monosaturated Fats

March 21st, 2008

Pregnancy Tip – “Healthy Fats” and “Slow Carbs” Improve Ovulation and Fertility Odds

New Research from Harvard Study Supports a Diet High in Monosaturated Fats from Natural Food Sources Like Nuts and Avocados

March 25, 2008 (New York, NY) – In groundbreaking news previously unknown to generations of women struggling with infertility, researchers at Harvard’s School of Public Health have confirmed a diet high in “healthy fats” from foods like nuts and avocados improves odds of fertility.

The study, printed in the November 1, 2007 edition of Obstetrics & Gynecology, showed that eating foods with a high ratio of mono-saturated fats to trans-fats and a low glycemic index (GI) can improve ovulation and fertility.  With only a few simple switches in diet, couples that struggle with infertility – one in six, according to researchers in the U.S. and Europe – can improve their odds of conceiving.

Easy changes to your diet to lower GI and raise your ratio of monosaturated to transfats include:

  • Snacking on nuts and fruits instead of potato chips and pretzels,
  • Using olive oil instead of butter or processed oils,
  • Eating whole-grain bread instead of white bread, and
  • Consuming foods with natural sugars instead of processed sugars like high-fructose corn syrup.

One ideal snack for couples looking for a healthy alternative is KIND Fruit + Nut Bars. This best-selling line of nutrition bars features all-natural ingredients you can see and pronounce, and are free of transfats, cholesterol, wheat, gluten, dairy, and sulfur. They also have a low glycemic index and are low in sodium.

Available in over 15,000 locations in every state in the U.S., KIND offers a delicious and healthy alternative to the mash-up energy bars largely composed of emulsified grain and other fillers. KIND bars are made only from the highest quality fruits and nuts and packaged in clear wrappers, inviting inspection by picky consumers. The bars have received high-praise from nutrition experts and won Health Magazine’s “Snack of the Year” in 2005.

About PeaceWorks Holdings LLC

Peaceworks Holdings LLC is a “not-only-for-profit” gourmet and healthy foods company based out of New York, NY. Since its beginnings in 1994, PeaceWorks Holdings has been a business that pursues both profit and peace. PeaceWorks currently sells three different lines of products: KIND Fruit + Nut Bars, Bali Spice (Asian cooking sauces), and MEDITALIA Tapenades and Pestos.

KIND is an award-winning brand of all-natural fruit and nut bars that donates five percent of profits to the PeaceWorks Foundation’s philanthropic efforts. Bali Spice is a gourmet line of ready-to-use sauces from Thai, Indian and Chinese cuisine, and made in a woman-owned factory in Indonesia, through the cooperation of Christians, Buddhists and Muslims. MEDITALIA Tapenades and Pestos are produced in Israel through cooperation between Israelis and Arabs from neighborhood countries. Similar to KIND, five percent of profits from Bali Spice and MEDITALIA sales also go to the PeaceWorks Foundation.

The PeaceWorks Foundation is a non-profit organization that fosters co-existence between people in conflict across the world, and particularly in the Middle East. The company has made such an impact with its efforts that in December 2007, PeaceWorks won Fast Company’s “Social Capitalist Award” for the fourth consecutive year. The Foundation’s hallmark project is The OneVoice Movement, the leading grassroots organization in Israel and Palestine helping to amplify moderate Israeli and Palestinian voices against violence and extremism.

Their Secret to Success: Team nutritionist Heidi Skolnik praises KIND Fruit + Nut Bars as a great healthy snack, February 2008

February 21st, 2008

Their Secret to Success:
Super Bowl Champs NY Giants Love KIND!New York Giants LOVE KIND

After trying out KIND Fruit + Nut Bars with players from the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants during their training camp last year, the team’s nutritionist, Heidi Skolnik, sent us a very kind note to let us know how much the players loved them. It got us thinking: was the Giants’ success this season due to Eli Manning’s brilliant play, an incredible defensive front, or something else? Just food for thought in case you’re trying to fuel some “super” success of your own…

Heidi Skolnik’s letter can be found below:

“Thank you for providing KIND Fruit + Nut Bars to the 2007 Giants “Welcome to Training Camp Snack Pack.” These healthy snacks were a big hit with the players and coaches who are always looking for new on-the-go snacks due to the demands of their lifestyles. (Many even came back for more!)

“As the sports nutritionist for the team, I am always looking for new ways to expand the players’ food selections and introduce them to foods they might not otherwise try. Healthy snacking is an important aspect of any athletic training program, and your bars are a perfect grab-and-go snack for an athlete, as the combination of dried fruit and nuts provides necessary calories in the form of carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats, as well as fiber and many other beneficial nutrients.  In addition, the variety of flavors offers something for everyone. Recognizing that consuming adequate energy before, during, and after training helps ensure peak performance, I feel comfortable recommending KIND Fruit + Nut Bars as an appropriate healthy snack alternative for our players.

“On behalf of Nutrition Conditioning Inc and the Giants organization, much appreciation for contributing in our efforts to keep the players at their peak.

Healthfully,

Heidi Skolnik MS, CDN, FASCM
Nutritionist, The New York Giants

Three to try: KIND bars The Denver Post, August 2007

Three to try: KIND bars
By The Denver Post

KIND Bars: Chock-full of whole nuts and fruit chunks, these energy bars actually taste good. One taster said: "I’m a fig fan, and it had plenty of that. Moist. Chewy. Fruity, but not gummy. No aftertaste. Surprisingly filling." Not only are they tasty and good for you, they do good. Five percent of the profits (it’s the fastest-growing energy bar brand) goes to the Peace Works Foundation, which encourages business cooperation "among people of opposing beliefs in volatile regions, such as the Middle East and Indonesia," and supports the OneVoice Movement that gives moderate Palestinians and Israelis the means to be heard.|Major grocery stores; www.kindsnacks.com |Kristen Browning-Blas
