Send kids back to school with fruits and nuts to keep them fueled

Nutrition expert, Linda Farr, visited CBS San Antonio with advice on healthy back to school snacks. Linda recommended putting together a homemade trail mix of fruits and nuts or choosing KIND as a tasty, less expensive, pre-portioned alternative. Linda emphasized that snacks should be treated as mini meals and suggested dipping pieces of KIND in yogurt for a combination of carbs and protein that will keep kids fuller longer.

Denverites Do the KIND Thing on the nightly news!

ABC Denver was on the scene at the KIND Food Truck this KIND Tuesday, where people came by to make their kindness count for local homeless children. The nightly news featured the wave of Denver citizens who carried out the KINDING Mission (to give a cold beverage to someone working outside) so that KIND could team up with Colorado Coalition for the Homeless and give backpacks and school supplies to hundreds of local homeless children.

A record breaking month of KINDING

This month, we asked people to send a thank you note to someone who protects them, and we saw an overwhelming response.  Furthermore, in many cases, we saw people give much, much more than a thank you note.

This month brought about an unprecedented number of KINDING Missions completed, and with that, came an unprecedented number of stories that people shared, describing their individual KINDING experience.  Although it was difficult to choose, check out some of our favorites below!

“I sent a thank you note to a veteran that lives near me. He was caught in an explosion in the Iraqi was a few years ago. My note was much appreciated by him and it felt really good to do it.”

- David W.

“Just complete the KIND mission for today. A thank you note to a local police officer. He takes time out of his day to visit my sons’ school and have lunch with various classes. Now my boys recognize him around town. A good thing!”

-Krismar

“My story starts in a Walgreens pharmacy. I had just gotten out of the E.R and needed to pick up some medicines that were prescribed to me. A young man was in line in front of me and he was trying to obtain his antibiotic and pain medications, but he didn’t have enough money to pay for them. He was 10 dollars short. Everyone in line just stood there and looked at him. No one else wanted to help him, but I did. I paid for his medications in full and he smiled at me, with tears in his eyes. He said that he didn’t have any money, but asked if he could repay me with a hug. I took that hug and have never forgotten that young man nor to help when I can.”

-Victoria F.

“I went out to lunch with some friends. In the restaurant that we went to there were six local police officers and an entire swat team. I did not have a note card so I wrote my thank you on a napkin. When I got up my courage I went over to the six local police officers and explained that I was on a KINDING Mission and that I wanted to thank them for protecting all of us. They shook my hand, thanked me for acknowledging them. It really felt good. I look forward to the next mission. Thanks for the opportunity to be part of the KINDING Mission.”

-Susie R.

“I sent a card to my family friend who is overseas and thanked him for all that he does for our country. He was really surprised and wrote a very nice thank you note on my facebook wall.  Just a simple “thank you” can go a LONG way! :)

-Monique D.

“I brought a plate of homemade cupcakes to the EMR guys in our emergency department… (our ambulance service).  I wanted to thank them for everything they do for our patients before they get to the hospital.”

-Johanna B.

“My husband and I took a basket of kind bars to our neighborhood Fire Department and EMTs to thank them for protecting not only us but our community in times of fire and injury!! They loved the gift and was quite surprised!!”

-Amy A.

The KIND Food Truck Spreads KINDNESS in Philly!

Since arriving in Philadelphia on May 13th, the KIND Food Truck has received a warm welcome from the City of Brotherly Love. Not even the rain has been able to put a damper on our visit so far!  From historic Old City to Center City office buildings and the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art made famous by Rocky Balboa, the KIND Food Truck has been spotted all over.

Highlights include parking along iconic Boathouse Row, where we handed out complimentary KIND bars to the crew teams, spectators and fitness enthusiasts during the Dad Vail Regatta; as well as KINDING people heading to Jim’s Cheesesteaks on South Street. Passers-by were all too happy to grab a healthy snack before hopping in line (Note: Philadelphians, we recommend you eating your KIND bar “without” (whiz AND onions))

We’ve been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of the many KINDAHOLICS we’ve had the pleasure of meeting during our KIND Food Truck travels in Philly.  ”These are the best. They’re all natural, and you can read the ingredients right on the back,” one woman informed her friend.  ”These are good…I had one the other day!” stated a man who began flagging down pedestrians and sending them over to our Food Truck window.

Be sure to keep an eye on the KIND Food Truck web page  for more updates and our Twitter feed for exact locations (@KINDsnacks, #KINDFoodTruck)!

Make every day KIND Tuesday!

People everywhere are finding out just how good it feels to Do the KIND Thing and surprise someone else with an unexpected act of kindness (a.k.a. KINDING). One small KINDING can brighten someone else’s day (and yours too) in a BIG way! Here are some ideas for how you make everyday KIND Tuesday…

1. Pay for the person behind you in line
2. Share your umbrella with someone caught in the rain
3. Hold the door for the person (or people!) behind you
4. Cook/bake a healthy treat for a neighbor
5. Volunteer at a local soup kitchen/homeless shelter/community center
6. Offer to help carry someone else’ s heavy bags/groceries
7. Call up an old friend or family member you haven’t spoken to in a while
8. Donate old clothes, books and belongings you no longer use
9. Email a good song to a coworker, colleague or peer
10. Tip your busboy in addition to your waiter

KIND’s Nutrition Correspondent, Alicia Gilmore, teaches us how to ‘Eat with Color’

It’s time again to check in with our KIND Nutrition Correspondent, Registered Dietitian, Alicia Gilmore. This month, Alicia is here to teach us how adding a little “color” to our diets will help ensure that our bodies are getting the essential vitamins and nutrients they need. Read Alicia’s monthly post below to learn more!

March is a favorite month for nutrition nuts like me. Not only does it mark the arrival of National Nutrition Month and Registered Dietitian Day (March 9), but it also brings the first signs of spring and the return of some color! Fittingly, this year, along with the American Dietetic Association, I am working to teach people how to ‘Eat Right with Color.’

Colorful natural foods can be great sources of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Take a look at berries for example – strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries are all rich with color and serve as excellent sources of vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that can help repair damage to cells. Whereas vibrant carrots, spinach, sweet potatoes, and bell peppers provide significant amounts of Vitamin A, an essential nutrient that keeps our skin healthy and can also promote a strong immune system.

So, on your next trip to the supermarket, keep an eye out for some color – don’t be afraid to try healthy foods packed with purple, red, green, orange, or even blue! Chances are, you won’t go wrong in being KIND to your body!

- Alicia Gilmore, MS, RD, CSO, LD, KIND Nutrition Correspondent
