RAISING THE BAR

PEACEWORKS
We're usually profoundly indifferent to energy bars. They always seem like candy bars disguised as something healthful.
But we're nuts about the KIND fruit-and-nut bars: whole nuts, big yummy pieces of dried fruit -- this is real food, and real good. Made in Australia, they come in flavors such as macadamia and apricot; almond and coconut; and sesame and peanuts with chocolate. Calorie counts range from 150 to 225 per bar, and sugar from 7.8 grams to 17.4.
Locally, they're sold at Albertsons, Kroger, Vitamin Shoppe and Whole Foods stores; suggested retail is $2 a bar. The PeaceWorks company, which makes them, also offers monthly shipments of a case of KIND bars at a 10 percent discount, at www.kindsnacks.com/frequent-kind.html.
A bonus is that part of KIND sales goes to the PeaceWorks Foundation, whose programs foster peaceful co-existence worldwide.
