BACKBONES – No Barriers!

Overview
What is your cause and how will it make the world kinder?

BACKBONES will take a group of 5-10 people with spinal cord injury or disease (SCI/D) to the No Barriers Summit, a 4 day weekend of exploration, personal growth, community building and adventure with over 50 adaptive activities, speakers, and innovative technologies. We will give individuals a cross-disability experience that they might not otherwise have due to isolation or financial barriers associated with living with spinal cord injury. They will meet others with similar or very different disabilities and learn from each other. Participants will be empowered to make change in their communities and be advocates for themselves and others with disabilities.

How will you use the $10k?

Funding will cover partial or full expenses for 5-10 individuals with spinal cord injury or disease to have an unforgettable experience at the No Barriers Summit in Lake Tahoe, California on June 1-4, 2017. Expenses can include airfare, ground transportation, lodging, Summit pass and meals.

What impact do you hope to make?

The No Barriers Summit has the potential to empower individuals with spinal cord injuries or disease by offering an opportunity: 1) to experience traveling after becoming paralyzed; 2) learn how to advocate for their needs; 3) find peer support in others with disabilities; 4) gain leadership skills; and 5) network with others from all over the country. We hope that this experience creates leaders among people with disabilities by giving them a new found confidence. They will feel less isolated and become motivated to pursue the quality of life they desire such as education, employment, meaningful relationships, recreation and/or civic engagement.
