Overview
What is your cause and how will it make the world kinder?

We are a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to work with at risk kids to break the cycle and move forward by engaging in positive activities, inspiring peers and motivating others to be the best they can be. We strive to foster a sense of connection between youth and their community through mentoring, educational leadership, and recreational empowerment.

We believe that peer mentoring is the key for at-risk youth to break the cycle. Through promoting recreation and education and providing basic necessities to youth we give children the confidence to own their future and follow their dreams.

We have seen great success, both academically and socially, and lifelong friendships stem from our Big Little mentoring program.

How will you use the $10k?

During the next 6 months, Together We Own It will use the KIND Cause Grant to fund a mobile donation truck that will allow us to take necessary items such as clothing, school supplies/ school uniforms, and hygiene products right into the heart of communities in need. This truck will also allow our uniform exchange program to deliver uniforms to Title I schools. $5,000 would go towards this effort, allowing us to purchase a vehicle and redesign it to accommodate shelving and dressing rooms. The remaining $5,000 will be put towards our C.O.R.E sports program, providing youth the opportunity to play on a team, as well as the beginning efforts of our after school program that will provide a safe space for low income elementary aged youth.

What impact do you hope to make?

By the end of 2017, TWOI hopes to increase the confidence and attitudes of 100 youth in Maryland by 1) tripling the size and impact of our existing mentoring program 2) running a successful after school program, catering to children enrolled in Maryland Title I schools and 3) operating a mobile store to deliver basic necessities to local children in need. Our goal is to provide support and guidance to children who may struggle academically and/or socially by equipping them with the relationships and opportunities needed to improve themselves and their futures.

With this grant we will be able to start making an impact right away. By the end of May, we would look to have secured a vehicle for our mobile store and begin the design work to have it running by summertime. Beginning immediately we would increase our C.O.R.E members by allowing more children to participate on a sports team. In addition, our team will increase recruitment for both mentors and mentees by utilizing more marketing tools and tabling events to get the word out there of such a great opportunity for all. Finally, TWOI will be able to accelerate the process for beginning an after-school program alongside a local church. By June, we hope to have 15 children registered for the summer program.

Every month, KIND supports one cause with $10,000
