Because their cape is in the Wash – Gracie's Gowns

Jessica Kidd
What is your cause and how will it make the world kinder?

Gracie's Gowns empower children to look beyond their diagnosis, and to see themselves for who they truly are outside of it. They are no longer a cancer kid, but rather a child with cancer. Each gown is custom made not only to the child's size, they are tailored to their likes and interests with fabric that matches what they love most. Then, each gown is personalized with the first name of each child.

It is something that belongs to them, becomes a part of their story, and allows them to have an element of control in a world where they have no say in what happens next. Along the way, each gown makes the uncomfortable experience of going to the hospital, a little less frightening, a little less painful, and a little more like home.

How will you use the $10k?

Over the past five years, Gracie's Gowns has made and donated over 500 personalized gowns to children across the globe. The cost to do so between supplies and shipping expenses is over $30,000 each year alone. These funds would be used within six months to cover the costs for fabric, thread, snaps, embroidery needs, and shipping expenses.

What impact do you hope to make?

Children, under the age of 18 years old, and their families are served by our organization each day. This award would allow us to continue to impact these families throughout their child's life. We stay with families, even through death and help create a support network for them with other families traveling the same path of complex medical care needs.

As an organization, we're changing the way children with chronic illnesses see themselves in the world around them. Not only are they able to see themselves beyond their diagnosis, but they're empowered to discover what they can do despite their diagnosis. They're more willing to have hope, when nothing is going right, and push through the odds stacked against them.

Every month, KIND supports one cause with $10,000
