Improving Disability Care in Haiti

What is your cause and how will it make the world kinder?

In 2016, we witnessed three children with disabilities die of neglect and starvation in an orphanage. This moved us to intervene on behalf of four children in the same institution. Saraphina, Junior, Charlie and Mackenwood now receive 1:1 care with Haiti Mama. We provide full medical services, specialized diets, and physical therapy. Each child has a mama who attends to their personal needs. All four children have gained weight, mobility, strength and communication ability.

It is our goal to provide the best care possible for the kids in our care. We're seeking a grant to purchase equipment needed to enhance their quality of life and train our mamas in best care practices.

How will you use the $10k?

$1000: Custom Wheelchairs with Trays
$150: Safe Straws; Drink Holders for Wheelchairs
$600: Assertive Communication Technology
$2000: Pediatric Gait Trainer
$650: Foam Mats and Positioning Pillows
$700: Special Needs Sensory Swings
$300: Music Therapy Equipment
$900: Therapeutic Swimming Equipment
$700: Adaptive Feeding Utensil and Height Chairs
$1000: Handicap Accessability and Safety for Property
$500: Bath Chairs
$1500: Training Program for mamas working in our Disability Care Program

What impact do you hope to make?

The impact of this grant is reaches further than the four kids we currently serve. The mamas that work as caregivers will be incredibly empowered by the training and education these funds will provide them. Furthermore, once we are set up with adaptive and therapeutic equipment, we will offer therapy services and training for families in the community.

It is an overarching goal to improve the ethical standard of services for children with disabilities in Haiti. Here children are abandoned and neglected in orphanages and hospitals in staggering numbers.
