Michael's Meanies

What is your cause and how will it make the world kinder?

Michael's Meanies were created by my son Michael Carroll because he heard a little girl crying in the hospital and wanted to give her something to comfort her. Keep in mind he was in the hospital because he had just went through brain surgery for a tumor. He wanted to be able to give the kids something they could use to take out their frustrations of dealing with cancer. Michael wanted the kids to be able to squeeze them, throw them or even kick them. The "meanies" are not a soft cuddly toy or a beanie baby. They are exactly what he intended them to be, a stress toy. The "Meanies" are 100% polyurethane and latex free.

How will you use the $10k?

The most significant cost of our budget is for the "meanies" themselves. Second would be the postage because they are mailed to the facilities always free of charge. In addition we need boxes, tape and paper and ink of course. Everyone involved in the distribution of Michael's Meanies are volunteers so that every penny goes directly into getting them into the hands of the kids.

What impact do you hope to make?

The impact on the lives of the patients has been seen on many levels; less stress at the office/hospital visits and less anger/fear during the treatments. The "meanies" will not cure cancer or even take away the pain the kids must endure during their treatment but if they can help take their minds off of the situation for a little while and bring a smile then Michael has succeeded in his fulfilling his wish for that little girl who is crying in the hospital.

Other Details

Michael faced every challenge he was given with courage and determination but lost his battle on July 3rd, 2014. Michael's Dream was for every child with cancer to receive a "meanie" of their very own. Unfortunately around 13,000 children in the United States are diagnosed with some type of cancer every year so the journey must continue.

Every month, KIND supports one cause with $10,000
