What is your cause and how will it make the world kinder?
Our goal is to improve media representation of female athletes in order to inspire more females to pursue sport and its benefits that advance gender equality. In America, women make up 40% of all athletes but only receive 4% of coverage. In Australia, horse-racing gets more coverage than all of women’s sports combined! The statistics are even worse in other countries. Shirzanan plans complementary workshops: one, sports reporting for female journalists covering female athletes and two, media skills training for female athletes. More narratives by and about empowered females - including Muslims - will foster understanding, influence gender norms and create a more balanced, kinder world.
How will you use the $10k?
All $10,000 will be applied directly to the workshops and maximizing the reach of the participants.• $4000 – To create the workshops: We will conduct due diligence to cover all aspects of the training workshops. • $4000 – To hire specialized instructors: We will hire specialized instructors on sports reporting and media skills that will incorporate discussion on women's issues, gender norms and advocacy.• $2000 – To ensure accessibility by participants: We will use these funds to ensure journalists and athletes will be relieved of any financial concerns related to attending the training workshops.
What impact do you hope to make?
With the support of KIND Causes, the Shirzanan workshops will yield qualitative and quantitative improvements in the narratives around females in sport by creating a supportive community among journalists and athletes, in person and a virtual network. By holding our workshops in Baku around the Islamic Solidarity Games, training both non-Muslim and Muslim women, and utilizing our international media network, we will expand the reach of multi-national female voices that promote cross-cultural understanding and attract more females to sport and its consequent skills to advocate for and advance gender equality.
