What is your cause and how will it make the world kinder?
Parkinson’s is a chronic and progressive neurological disorder. Unfortunately, there’s no cure for Parkinson’s, and its cause is unknown. While there are medications available to help manage the symptoms, exercise has been shown to help slow this progressive disease. Research shows that people with Parkinson's who exercise a minimum of 2.5 hours a week experience a slowed decline in quality of life. Part of our group's mission is to provide education and support to our members. We do this by sponsoring more than a dozen weekly exercise classes specifically designed for people with Parkinson's disease. We have been able to offer these classes free of charge and with your support can continue to do so.
How will you use the $10k?
In addition to using the funds to pay our certified trainers for each class they teach, we will use the funds to send one trainer to the Rock Steady Training Camp and one trainer to the PWR 4 Life Certified Trainer program. Both of these sessions will be conducted in the fall. We will also purchase additional equipment to be used in our exercise classes. For training, we will spend $3,000. The balance will cover new equipment ($3,000) as well as current exercise instructor fees for 6 months of Rock Steady Boxing ($4,000)
What impact do you hope to make?
We will be able to help our 400 members (people with Parkinson's and their spouse/caregiver) in Sussex County, DE fight Parkinson's disease. These exercise classes help with not only with the physical symptoms, but also with the social isolation that many people with Parkinson's face.
