say hello to Gisele Nelson of Plywood People

By KIND Editor

Hello KIND friends. I’m Gisele Nelson, the community manager at Plywood People. We do two things over here at Plywood. We produce a series of conferences and events geared toward connecting business leaders, non-profit activists and creatives to help them pursue their community-changing ideas. We also run two entrepreneurial businesses—Gift Card Giver collects gift cards and redistributes them to organizations in need. Billboard Bags takes refugees through a job training program where we teach English, financial management and sewing skills—we then sell bags sewn by members of the program to retailers and wholesale. But the larger goal is to transform the job market for refugees in our own community by placing skilled workers in positions where they can earn more than minimum wage. KIND has always been an incredible support and partner in our work and events, and we are inspired by their motto to Do the KIND Thing.

We’re doing the kind thing by supporting the people around us and helping them pursue their amazing ideas—and we love what we do. As social entrepreneurs we know what it takes to start something new. Because of experience learned from making our own ideas happen, we feel confident about being a voice for other social entrepreneurs.

Sometimes, all someone needs to pursue an idea is a little encouragement, inspiration or push. I get to interact with some of the most innovative people in the country and I’m looking to provide that little piece of encouragement through practical tips for social entrepreneurs and inspirational stories of Plywood People—those doing the kind thing for their world.
