KINDING our way into spring

May’s KIND Tuesday showed yet another flow of kindness from our community.   KINDAHOLICS across the country took the simple challenge of preparing a healthy meal for someone who makes them feel full and transformed this act of kindness into something much bigger.  Beyond the touching and creative ways that our community prepared meals for someone special, their kindness has enabled us to work with the San Francisco and Marin Food Banks to provide thousands with healthful meals.

As always, everyone’s kindness counted in helping us reach our goals, and below are some of our favorite stories from KINDAHOLICS who accepted the KINDING Mission.  We will be sending a KIND Cube to each of the winners below for making us feel very happily full this month:

I have a heart condition and have not been feeling well.  I have an appointment in a week, so my loving husband has done everything and not letting me lift a finger. One night when he came home I had a healthy salmon dinner waiting for him.The smile on his face was priceless. He gives so much for me and I will continue to do what ever I can to do a kind act for someone as special as my husband and pass it along to family friends and a stranger if they let me.
- Monica

My mom has always been the go-to gal in her small community. If someone is ill and needs help, there’s mom. If someone is going through a rough patch, there’s mom. She cooks dinners for elderly women in her town that cannot help themselves and cannot afford to go to a “home” where they can be cared for. The least I could do is make HER a meal. Nothing special, just something SHE didn’t have to make. It was refreshing to be able to help her, after all she has done for friends and family. It made me feel good to be able to say “No, Mom, you can’t help. Just go sit down and we will chat while I make dinner!”
- Colleen

I have a friend who is going through a rough time. We had a LOT of leftover chicken from a barbeque, to I cooked it, put it in a cooler, and gave the whole thing to her. She was so grateful she almost cried.
- Teresa

I have been making meals for an older couple. The wife has Alzheimers’s and the husband is so kind and patient with her. His caring attitude is an inspiration to me!
- Debbie

This week I met a homeless family traveling to the city for work so I invited to have dinner at my home and told them about how they could start anew in this town. They thanked me for dinner and said they will let me know how things work out. They were nice family and I hope to hear from them soon.

Join us to remember Emily Shane and continue keeping her kindness alive

We wanted to take a moment to reach out to our KIND community to join us in supporting a very important cause that is also aiming to make the world a little KINDER.

This cause supports, Emily Shane, a 13 year old girl whose life tragically ended unexpectedly on April 3, 2010 by a suicidal driver on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California. Her sudden death had a tremendous impact on her family and entire community and has touched us as well.

Emily was an example of someone who truly embodied the spirit of kindness – the type of person who would always lend an empathetic ear and who shared her enthusiasm for life with everyone she met.

In Emily’s honor, her family created a website called emilyshane.org, which is helping Emily’s kindness live on by serving as a place where we can all work together to make the world a little kinder. All you have to do is post a good deed that you’ve done in order to bring us all closer to the goal of one hundred million good deeds. This can be the smallest gesture of kindness or a major act of significance – any act of kindness counts!

We hope you will join us in logging on your good deed and we hope that when you do, you will be reminded of Emily’s story and her family’s inspiring will to endure through the power of kindness.

KINDAHOLIC, Derek Flanzraich, tells us why KIND is the “Greatist”

This month, we talked with Derek Flanzraich, the CEO and founder of Greatist.com, to learn more about his inspiring work …and his love for KIND!

KIND: Derek, you are the CEO and founder of Greatist. Can you explain what Greatist is for those who may be hearing about it for the first time?

Derek: You bet! Greatist is the web’s trusted and relatable source for health, fitness, and happiness articles, news, and tips. Basically, we write high-quality content (every fact is cited by a PubMed study, every article approved by multiple experts) in a down to earth, fresh, and fun voice. We’re working to inspire and inform the world to make healthier choices.

KIND: What inspired you to create Greatist?

Derek: Greatist was very much born out of personal frustration, as I was having trouble finding an online health and fitness resource that I could trust. I couldn’t believe there wasn’t a place I could turn to for reliable motivation and inspiration to pursue healthier choices. So I started one – one inspired by the not-only-for-profit message.

KIND: How important is it for you to maintain a healthy lifestyle?

Derek: We very much live the life we champion at Greatist and I’m definitely no exception! There’s a reason we have healthy snacks (like fresh fruit and, of course, KIND bars) at the Greatist headquarters and encourage working out at any (and all) times of the day.

KIND: How did you first hear about KIND? Any specific flavor(s) that got you hooked?

Derek: I tried my first KIND bar (Cranberry Almond + Antioxidants) thanks to a gluten-free editor here at Greatist. I was hooked from then on (and not just because they’re the perfect combo snack with some iced green tea or coffee at Starbucks).

KIND: In your opinion, what is something small that we could all do to make the world a little KINDER?

Derek: Laugh more. Things are hilarious. Don’t be afraid to enjoy them!

Now that’s our KIND of advice! Many thanks to Derek for chatting with KIND this month and please make sure to check out www.Greatist.com for great articles and tips on how to be KIND to your body and discover your healthiest and happiest self!
